How to Take Perfect Engagement Ring Photos

With millions of couples getting engaged, you can expect your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to be flooded with proposal pictures and engagement ring selfies. This recent phenomenon of ring photos has become many couples’ preferred method for sharing the news of their engagement with family and friends. A sparkling snap of the engagement ring, paired with a cute caption and posted to social media, seems to have replaced the traditional good news phone call.

Of course, with any fad comes a lot of competition and over-saturation. I’ve seen some entirely un-friendly conversations go on between friends over how big the ring looks in person vs. how it looked in a ring selfie.

Some hand lotion and a manicure can go a long way in making your hands look their best for engagement ring photos. Otherwise, there is no reason to use any photography trickery to make a diamond engagement ring look larger or different than it appears in person. There are plenty of ways to enhance the natural beauty of your diamond to achieve a gorgeous, true-to-life engagement ring selfie.

What will make your ring sparkle the most?

engagement-rings

Two words: natural light. Nothing will show off your engagement ring’s sparkle quite like sunlight. If you live near the ocean, lake, or even a river, a beach scene is ideal for letting your diamond sparkle in natural light. In addition to being a popular proposal spot, the beach presents a unique photo op. This is because both the sun’s light and the reflection of the sun on the water will enhance the center diamond’s brilliance.

On the other hand, stay away from taking engagement ring photos in dim, yellow-toned light. In person, a reading light definitely gives diamonds a soft, romantic look. Unfortunately, this look does not translate well to photos, especially when it comes to yellow gold diamond engagement rings. At best the center stone will look blurry, and at worst it will look like it has a very low color grade.

What will make your diamond look bigger (and smaller)?

engagement-rings

No matter how large or small your ring’s center diamond actually is, certain angles and setups can change the appearance of its size. First and foremost, make sure to take a top-down shot of your ring. This is also called a “table view”, and it will give the most accurate impression of the diamond’s size. Depending on which diamond cuts and ring settings are used, side-view photos of an engagement ring can be totally misleading. For example, a large diamond set in an engagement ring that sits low on the finger will look tiny in a side-view image.

Another way to get an accurate picture of the diamond’s size is to remove all other jewelry and accessories from your hand and wrist before snapping a selfie. The shapes and sizes of your other jewelry can skew how big the center stone appears. This is especially true for watches; large watch faces are still in right now, so by comparison the diamond will seem much smaller than it actually is.

When to Share Ring Details

engagement-rings

There has been debate about this topic since long before the era of the selfie. Nowadays, with social media being such a huge part of our everyday lives, awkward conversations and subjects like this one run the risk of being broadcast to friends, family, coworkers, and even random acquaintances.

My recommendation is to not share the finer details of your ring, especially carat weight and price. It could lead to comparisons, jealousy, criticism, and a whole mess of other bad social situations.

What are the right details to share? Any unique touches that enhance the ring’s meaning. For example, sharing the inscriptions from engraved engagement rings is sweet and definitely not too much information. Calling out your sister-in-law for having a smaller diamond? Not as sweet.

Some Quick Do’s and Don’ts:

engagement-rings
  • DON’T shy way from using your own hand. First off, it isn’t technically a “selfie” if you don’t have any of yourself in the photo, is it? Second, who cares if your nails or skin are perfect? Your friends and family shouldn’t; they should care about your happy announcement first and foremost. If you have a particularly critical audience, you can always crop the photo so that it includes only your fingers and not the nails.
  • DON’T use flash on a diamond close-up. The stone’s brilliance will reflect back in a very unflattering way.
  • DON’T rely on zoom at all. It is extremely difficult to get a high-quality photo of an engagement ring if you zoom in on the center diamond. A zoomed-in photo will almost always come out blurry.
  • DON’T take a close-up of the table if you have an Asscher or emerald cut diamond. These shapes have sizable, open tables, so inclusions will appear more obvious. I would stay away from top-down close-ups of emerald and Asscher cuts, unless you want to answer a lot of questions about the “scratches” on your stone.

Diamond Ring | Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces, a Chicago engagement ring and watch boutique located at 112 E Oak Street houses the rarest diamonds in the world. Recently added to our collection of diamond rings is this stunning 18K white gold domed band ring with 167 round brilliant cut diamonds.

Who doesn't love diamond rings? Not only are diamond rings romantic gestures that profess your love for each other, but they also are stunning fashion accessories. Diamond rings are elegant gifts that can be used to celebrate a personal milestone such as graduating from college, having a baby, or getting promoted. Diamond rings are often used to symbolize a shared commitment or given simply because they are beautiful and significant. No matter what the occasion, a diamond ring is a gift that always brings joy.

If you've ever wondered why your diamond ring looks different in sunlight versus candlelight or daylight versus office lights, it's because the cut of your diamond responds differently depending on the light and the environment you are in. How - and where - you look at your diamond can greatly change its appearance.

What Does Your Engagement Ring Say About You and Your Wedding Style?

Do you love to be different or prefer to stay on top of the latest trend? Do you favor timeless elegance or love to be edgy? Whatever your style, Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago has an engagement ring that suits it.

Classic Round Engagement Ring

You are going to want a classic wedding. From the A-line silhouette of your dress to your cathedral-length veil, everything is going to be timeless. The future partners are likely to be traditional, perhaps a bit conservative, faithful to each other, and very loyal.

You'll include some special details in your ceremony, like your grandmother's brooch pinned on your bouquet. In keeping with your elegant style, you'll probably choose a band over a DJ-you can't imagine having your first dance to anything but Sinatra.

A round-cut diamond is one of the most popular cuts for engagement rings, and for good reason. It sparkles like none other. Brides who favor this classic shape are traditionalists at heart, and recognize a good thing when they see it.

Emerald Cut Engagement Ring

You are drawn to minimalist elegance yet more often than not, money is no object when it comes to showering each other with affection. Your wedding gown is designed to fit close to your body and your style icons are cool girls like Kate Hudson and Keira Knightley.

You'll choose a simple bouquet of lilies, and you'll walk down an aisle lined with candles-because you are just that effortlessly chic. Instead of registering for gifts, you might ask guests to donate to your favorite cause to keep things simple.

Fewer facets make an emerald-cut diamond susceptible to revealing any flaws the stone may have, which means confidence is a must! Brides who favor this retro-inspired design are open to taking risks and delight in the unexpected.

Princess Cut Engagement Ring

You're a modern bride with edgier leanings. We wouldn't be surprised if you went for a more alternative bridal look, like a white pantsuit or a little white dress. You want to take your wedding off the beaten path. Rooftop gardens and small art galleries appeal to you.

The bride-to-be will most likely be a pampered spouse, with the future groom being a dedicated, thoughtful husband. The princess-cut diamond is a favorite among brides who want a traditional-shaped engagement ring, but with a little something extra. The stone's four pointed corners make it an excellent choice for a bride with a modern sensibility.

Pear Shaped Engagement Ring

The engaged couple can be quite independent and have high standards, but ultimately supportive of each other. Also known as a teardrop, the pear-shaped diamond is a hybrid of styles. Taking cues from both the oval and marquise, this unique shape is a perfect choice for those who play by their own set of rules and think that two is better than one.

Marquise Cut Engagement Ring

The engagement and marriage are punctuated with chic and glamorous events, calling for many opportunities to play dress-up.

Because of their shape, marquise-cut diamonds often appear larger than life. The shape of the stone is made to maximize carat weight, which can appeal to brides with a flair for drama.

Heart Shaped Engagement Ring

The future bride and groom are not afraid to indulge in public displays of affection now and then. They are also most likely to be giddy at their own wedding!

Consider a heart-shaped diamond the wild card in the bunch. Bashful brides who shy away from the spotlight need not consider this finely-crafted shape, as they'll be sure to attract attention wherever they go.

Oval Shaped Engagement Ring

Stability and serenity are important to the couple who choose this shape.

Essentially an elongated circle, an oval-shaped diamond can have just as many facets as a round-cut stone, which means it has the capacity to sparkle just as much. This elegant shape is a favorite among sophisticated brides who are also striving for something unique.

Cushion Cut Engagement Ring

Tradition is important to you, but you like to add your own trendy twist. We bet your "something blue" will come in the form of killer heels that you'll pair with a mermaid gown. It goes without saying that your wedding will be heavy on the glamour-sequin bridesmaid (or maybe too much tulle). Crystal embellished bouquets and champagne towers are all right up your alley.

A cushion-cut diamond gets it name from the rounded corners and curved sides that make it appear softer than a princess-cut diamond but not as circular as a round-cut stone. Everything from the name of the cut to the shape of the diamond is effortlessly romantic, as is the bride who wears one

Asscher Engagement Ring

This vintage-inspired style ha been a favorite among the fashion conscious crowd ever since Carrie Bradshaw modeled an asscher-cut engagement ring during her brief engagement to Aidan Shaw on Sex and the CityBrides who both follow and define the latest trends can wear this stone with confidence.

Radiant Cut Engagement Ring

True to its name, a radiant-cut diamond catches the light in a big way. The shape mimics an emerald-cut stone but the facets allow for extra sparkle. Brides who don't want to stray too far from the classic shapes appreciate this stone's timeless nature.

Colorful Engagement Ring

We have a feeling you like to do your own thing, We also have a feeling your dress will be unconventional, with a splash of color or quirky embellishments (or maybe even both). You never mind standing out, and your guests will remember your wedding as a crazy-fun party with amazing energy. If anyone is going to throw an exotic destination wedding or pull off a funky backyard theme, it's you.

Our Favorite Celebrity Engagement Rings | Geneva Seal | Chicago

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces, a Chicago engagement ring house, has been discussing celebrity engagement rings from Scarlett Johansson's vintage Art Deco style to Girls actress Allison Williams' classy conventional solitaire cut engagement ring.

While many stars choose over-the-top engagement rings, it's nice to see Mila Kunis rock a simple band with a round diamond. No baguettes. No insets. It's not ostentatious and she doesn't need a security team with her to wear it. It's a lot like her and Ashton Kutcher

Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara became engaged in December 2014 and her stunning oval-cut engagement ring takes our breath away. George Clooney presented Amal Clooney with a seven-carat-emerald-cut diamond engagement ring formed in a platinum setting.

Olivia Wilde and Halle Berry have two of the most original engagement rings we've seen. Olivia's fiance, Jason Sedukis chose to surround this circle diamond with a halo of emeralds to match Wilde's eyes (swoon). Halle Berry's three-stone ring setting is definitely glamorous and allows her unique personality to shine through with different combinations of diamonds and gemstones. The emerald in an emerald cut engagement ring is absolutely stunning.

Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian with a 15-carat diamond engagement ring at San Francisco's AT&T Park.

Matthew McConaughey picked out a vintage-style engagement ring - and wedding bands for the exceptionally gorgeous Camila Alves.

Just like relationships, each engagement ring has it's own unique identity so when you walk down the aisle, make sure you visit us at Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago to pick a ring that mirrors the love you feel for one another.

Sunrise Ruby Sold for a World Record Record of $30.3 Million & It Has Pigeon's Blood?

They say diamonds are forever, but you can't deny the seductive nature of a Rubie.

The Sunrise Ruby sold for a world auction record of $30.3 million last week. Set with diamonds, the extremely rare 25.59 carats piece has a “pigeon’s blood” hue with the Swiss Gemological Institute describing it as a “unique treasure of nature”, according to Sotheby’s. No, not real pigeon's blood, pigeon's blood is the trade term for a ruby with what the industry considers the deepest red with the most saturation

“In over 40 years, I cannot recall ever having seen another Burmese ruby of this exceptional size possessing such outstanding colour,” said David Bennett, the worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s international jewellery division.

#TBT: Mother's Day Love: Meet the Geneva Seal Family Part II

"All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother." Abraham Lincoln

Mother's Day is extra special at Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago. Being a family-owned business, family is first, second and third. We wanted to honor the amazing women who created the Geneva Seal family by introducing them to our digital family.

From our family to yours, here's a little motherly love we're happy to share with you.

Alex Kats has a vivacious mother who comes to the boutique quite often. Alex's parents don't live in Illinois, but whenever they're in town, his mother Rachel comes to Geneva Seal to work. Rachel used to organize and set the business in the right direction a long time ago, but when she's in town, you best believe she continues where she left off. She comes in at 9am and doesn't leave until the end of the day.

Much like his mother, Alex has a work ethic you don't see in most people. He doesn't take a day off and will stand for most of the day, giving Geneva Seal his 110% on a daily basis. I was talking to Michael, our Geneva Seal jeweler yesterday and he told me that Alex's leadership changed him from being a salesperson to a friend. Alex's clients always brag about his honesty and laid back approach and we definitely believe in thanking his mother for those sincere compliments. Happy Mother's Day Rachel. We hope to see you soon.

Igor's mother Larisa in no way looks like a mother of two grown adults, let alone a grandmother to three teenagers. Larisa is Alex's mother-in-law, making Igor his brother-in-law. They are closer than most brothers and their family bond is unbreakable.

I met Larisa at the Geneva Seal holiday dinner. Her and her stunning daughter, Alex's wife Irene laid out the most amazing and tasteful spread you could imagine. I could tell that these two ladies were the bond that holds this family together. Irene raises two teenage girls, a husband, and works full-time as an optometrist. I'm not sure how she finds the time to manage her schedule, but she makes it look effortless.

There's strength in motherhood no one but a mother could understand, which reminds me of the story Alex told us about Irene. Two days after his wife gave birth to their beautiful daughter, she was back at school to take the test which determined her becoming a doctor. Strength like that is rare and once again, the only woman to thank for acquiring such strength is her mother Larisa.

It's Not the Size of the Diamond in Nicki Minaj's Engagement Ring We're Not Impressed by, It's the Craftsmanship

Anybody, anybody wanna by a heart? Not only did Meek Mill find the way to Nicki Minaj's heart, he made it officially official with a humongous, heart-shaped engagement ring. After the Queen of rap released The Pinkprint, her heartbroken lyrics left us thinking it would take her quite some time to recover from the 11-year romance to.. what's his name?

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago would like to congratulate Nicki on her & Meek's friendship-turned-romance, but we do have a few things to say about the bling (don't we always?).

Expert jeweler Leonard Goldberg of Geneva Seal in Chicago said, "The unique non-traditional heart-shaped engagement ring makes a different statement and stands out. Based on pictures, it is approximately 10-12 carat Fancy Yellow Heart Shape Diamond." Alex Kats of Geneva Seal in Chicago adds, "If the size matters, the ring looks fantastic, but.." Leonard continues, "the mounting does not complement the heart-shape of the diamond by not accentuating the cleavage between the lobes, so it looks like a strawberry instead of a heart. The double row micro pave diamond halo setting is a sexy trend right now and the contrast between the white and yellow diamonds is the right way to go to bring out the color of the yellow center"

Update: Valentine's Day Contest Winners Wear Their His/Her Prizes During Gender Reveal Party

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago posted a Valentine's Day contest and our winners have just announced very BIG news: THEY'RE PREGNANT! While wearing their his/her Rachel Lynn Chicago for Geneva Seal bracelets, they hosted a fabulous gender reveal party & we're so excited to share the beautiful photos.

180,000-carat emerald from Brazil. Worth $900 million? Or nothing?

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago is intrigued by the case of the 180,000-carat Bahia Emerald from Brazil. Since 2001, the 840 pound uncut emerald has been the subject of a contentious court battle between a colorful crowd of gem traders, miners and a real estate tycoon all vying for the prized jewel - once valued at $372 million.

Bradley Campbell, writer for Public Radio International, explains:

"It’s been used to prop up a struggling tech company hoping to make it rich on high-definition televisions. It may or may not have been submerged in water during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It is said to have traveled from Brazil to (at least) San Jose, New Orleans and Los Angeles. And that’s why the saga of the Bahia is both fascinating and strange. It's been valued at $900 million."

Michael Chiero of Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago thinks otherwise. Michael is a graduate in diamonds, colored stones & an AJP. He thinks,

"that the shear size of the crystal and it's exciting story between the trading hands adds a tremendous value. Which in turn, would label the emerald as more of a collectible with a rich and mysterious history. From a gemological standpoint, majority of the emeralds mined from the Bahia region are know for being cloudy and filled with inclusions, typically selling for $10 or less per carat."

Michael continues, "depending on what could be fashioned into usable material, I would estimate that the emerald crystal would be worth less than $100,000.00. As a rare specimen with said history, well one can only speculate. Possibly a few million depending who's interested. The multi-million dollar values reported were part of an insurance scam where the owners were using it as collateral to fund a new flat screen TV business."

Crazy, yes. Confusing, sure. What we're excited to see is the finished product after this case is closed.  Once the ugly chunk of rock is cut, formed and polished by a jeweler. We can only hope something as beautiful as this unique ring centered upon a rare 20 carat mogul hand carved emerald will come out of this 14-year old saga.

Roy Lichtenstein + 100 Carat Diamond Engagement Ring = Happy Friday

If you're going to propose to me, I will no longer accept anything under a 100 carat diamond engagement ring. A emerald cut 100 carat diamond engagement ring to be exact. This ring has spoken to me. It may be the Roy Lichtenstein artwork in the background, but nonetheless, this incredible engagement ring has taken my breath away.

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago is known for housing the rarest diamonds in the world. We pride ourselves in the quality of our craftsmanship. Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces Is Ending the Blue Dress Debate

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago is ending the conversation about the blue dress using our jewelry. For the past half-day, people across social media have been arguing about whether a picture depicts a perfectly nice bodycon dress as blue with black lace fringe or white with gold lace fringe. And neither side will budge.

As always, jewelry has the answer to your problem America. We've placed Geneva Seal fine jewelry across the stripes of the dress in both colors; blue with black and white with gold. We want you to tell us if our blue sapphire diamonds mesh with the dress better, or is it the white gold with diamonds that almost perfectly match the dress.

Now, if you aren't able to clearly see that the blue sapphire diamonds look more similar to the color of the dress, you have more problems than Monica Lewinsky had during her dress scandal. The dress is BLUE. Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces has officially ended this debate. Happy Friday :)

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces Announces Valentine's Day Contest Winner

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago took the weekend to think about the winner of our Facebook Valentine's Day contest. We asked the ladies to post a unique idea or a piece of Valentine's Day advice for men in order to win a gift from Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces.

The decision wasn't an easy one. Many ladies took the time out of their day to write a detailed description of a sweet Valentine's Day idea. Chicago's favorite jeweler, Leonard Goldberg, decided between two creative and non traditional ideas after reading every single post.

He explained, "Picking a winner took me some time because we had so many great ideas but most of them were based on your standard date night. A man should be sending you flowers, taking you out to dinner, surprising you with little gestures of love daily so those responses didn't get me. But then, there were three posts, two of which had the same idea that I thought were more original than the rest."

Goldberg continues, "The first one was written by Irina LobanNova and the second/third by Beta Nourahmadi and Maria McCord. Irina focused on spending the day spreading love to those who need it the most. To volunteer at a nursing home or homeless shelter, followed by a romantic night with hot chocolate and ice skating is a charming idea. Irina's idea wasn't focused on herself, instead she wanted to spread love to those who may not be feeling loved. That's what Valentine's day is all about. You could do dinners and chocolates every day of the year. Bita and Maria also came up with a unique idea about creating a scavenger hunt. I thought that was creative and different. But the winner is definitely Irina! Congratulations to all of the ladies who posted some great ideas. It was fun reading your thoughts on how you want to spend Valentine's Day."

Our winner, Irina LobaNova, will be gifted with a special sparkler from Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces. The following text was taken from her Facebook post:

"How about sign up to volunteer at a nursing home or homeless shelter and spread the love. Valentine's day is about showing love and appreciation, and what better way to show share it than sharing it with people who don't have loved ones anymore....and then of course take your lady to a get a cup of hot chocolate and go ice skating at the Maggie Daley Park."

Congratulations Irina!
