180,000-carat emerald from Brazil. Worth $900 million? Or nothing?

Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago is intrigued by the case of the 180,000-carat Bahia Emerald from Brazil. Since 2001, the 840 pound uncut emerald has been the subject of a contentious court battle between a colorful crowd of gem traders, miners and a real estate tycoon all vying for the prized jewel - once valued at $372 million.

Bradley Campbell, writer for Public Radio International, explains:

"It’s been used to prop up a struggling tech company hoping to make it rich on high-definition televisions. It may or may not have been submerged in water during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It is said to have traveled from Brazil to (at least) San Jose, New Orleans and Los Angeles. And that’s why the saga of the Bahia is both fascinating and strange. It's been valued at $900 million."

Michael Chiero of Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago thinks otherwise. Michael is a graduate in diamonds, colored stones & an AJP. He thinks,

"that the shear size of the crystal and it's exciting story between the trading hands adds a tremendous value. Which in turn, would label the emerald as more of a collectible with a rich and mysterious history. From a gemological standpoint, majority of the emeralds mined from the Bahia region are know for being cloudy and filled with inclusions, typically selling for $10 or less per carat."

Michael continues, "depending on what could be fashioned into usable material, I would estimate that the emerald crystal would be worth less than $100,000.00. As a rare specimen with said history, well one can only speculate. Possibly a few million depending who's interested. The multi-million dollar values reported were part of an insurance scam where the owners were using it as collateral to fund a new flat screen TV business."

Crazy, yes. Confusing, sure. What we're excited to see is the finished product after this case is closed.  Once the ugly chunk of rock is cut, formed and polished by a jeweler. We can only hope something as beautiful as this unique ring centered upon a rare 20 carat mogul hand carved emerald will come out of this 14-year old saga.

Oscar De La Renta at Home

Oscar de la Renta brought his legendary style home to his birthplace, the Dominican Republic. The lush gardens, glamorous spaces, chic and sophisticated patterns remind me that Oscar will always be remembered as a man of elegant and timeless taste. I want to take you into his home, because as Oscar once said,

“What is nice about a house in the country is that it’s the work of a lifetime. You see the evolution of your own life in a way. You never finish.”

Did Johnny Depp Start a New Engagement Ring Trend?

As Johnny Depp promotes his new film "Transcendence" in China, people everywhere have diverted their attention to his left ring finger. Is the sexiest man alive off the market? Indeed he is. Depp recently confirmed his engagement to the lucky lady, Amber Read, 27. When asked about the engagement ring he's been rocking, Depp played cool, "I'm wearing a chick's engagement ring on my finger, being a fella," he said. "As far as you know... because I might be a woman!"

Hey, we're all for men wearing some serious engagement ring bling. Geneva Seal's very own, Alex Kats said, "A man who is confident enough to wear a woman's engagement ring, shows you just how comfortable he is in his own skin." We fully support this trend, and would love to see more men rocking out with diamonds on their left ring finger.

Now let's talk about the sweet engagement ring. Our expert jeweler, Leonard Goldberg, gives us his take on Depp's jewelry style, "Based on the time frame of the ring design, I'm thinking this is a 3-4 carat vintage European cut round center diamond with 3 graduated round diamonds on each side, and a tapered shank with Corinthian style hand engraved design."

We're so in love with this ring, we can't take our eyes off it (or him)! Congratulations to the happy couple, and thank you Mr. Depp for once again, straying from the pack.

Lilly Ghalichi, Shahs of Sunset Star, Engaged. Will She Keep Her Huge Diamond?

After only 2 months of dating, 'Shahs of Sunset' star and entrepreneur, Lilly Ghalichi is engaged to marry Dhar Mann, who RadarOnline.com reported made his millions by peddling marijuana paraphernalia, despite facing legal issues (fraud related).

Mann, 29, proposed to the Middle Eastern beauty while vacationing in the Maldives. "Engaged!!!!!!!!!!" Ghalichi, 30, wrote on Tuesday, April 1, shocking her fans with a breathtaking photo of her massive rock.

Now, let's get to the bottom of that bling. Reports have suggested the pear shaped diamond engagement ring to be between 12-15 carats, split shank design, a platinum setting with a halo of pave diamonds around it. Our very own jeweler, Leonard Goldberg, would quote a similar piece, custom made, between $1-2.5 Million depending on the quality of the diamond.

Ghalichi, with a net worth of $2.5 Million, isn't sure she wants to keep the ring. E! Online spoke with the Persian Barbie, she said, "The only thing is, now I'm not sure that's the ring I want! It's so big—where am I going to wear something like that?"

Oh darling, with a stunning engagement ring like that like that, you could walk around naked.
