Geneva Seal Fine Jewelry & Timepieces in Chicago has experienced some of the most magical moments with our clients; especially when they're shopping for an engagement ring.
We've had clients as young as 18 & as old as 80 shopping for engagement rings. Whether it's their first or tenth marriage, they have a magical glow to them, a sense of contentment, fulfillment and happiness. We've always wondered if there is an ideal age for marriage, so we did some research and found there actually is a magic number -- or so says science.
An article in The New York Times last December boldly declared that the oft-cited statistic that 50% of marriages end in divorce is a myth, and in fact, the divorce surge is a thing of the past.
"The delay in marriage is part of the story, allowing people more time to understand what they want in a partner and to find one."
According to The Institute of Family Studies, and conventional wisdom, getting married under the age of 20 carries a risk of divorce within the first five years: a whopping 32 percent. And it decreases after then. Between age 20 and 24, the risk is 20%; between 25 and 29, it's 15%; and between 30 and 34, it's 14%. But then, the trend reverses: From age 35 and up, the divorce risk climbs to 19%.
"My data analysis shows that prior to age 32 or so, each additional year of age at marriage reduces the odds of divorce by 11 percent. However, after that the odds of divorce increase by 5 percent per year," writes Nicholas H. Wolfinger, a professor of family and consumer studies and adjunct professor of sociology at the University of Utah."
Thirty-two, it appears is the magic number.
We're not ones to disagree with science but we are supporters of love and marriage at any age. Maybe it's not the age that matters, maybe it's the time it takes to find your perfect match. When you've found your perfect person, we're here for your engagement ring needs.
